Officials at Narita International Airport near Tokyo, Japan, Tuesday asked Paris Hilton to stay overnight at an airport hotel following six hours of questioning related to her guilty plea for cocaine possession in Las Vegas on Monday.
The Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau told Japan's Kyodo News agency it planned to continue its procedures Wednesday, reported The Associated Press. Under Japanese law, immigration authorities can deny entry to individuals convicted of drug-related offenses.
Hilton's whereabouts late Tuesday were unclear. There are five hotels at the airport itself, while the Hilton Tokyo Narita Airport hotel, part of the Hilton hotel dynasty founded by the heiress' great-grandfather Conrad Hilton, is a 10-minute shuttle ride away.
Hilton, 29, had flown to Japan with her younger sister Nicky, 26, to unveil her 2010 fall/winter collection of fashion accessories, said People magazine. The press event in Tokyo's high-end Roppongi district, said Reuters, was canceled.
Hilton's Los Angeles-based publicist, Dawn Miller, released a statement acknowledging that the socialite "was delayed by immigration authorities at a Japanese airport this evening after arriving for business obligations planned many months earlier." The statement said Hilton "was contractually bound to her business trip and didn't want to let down her brands and many Asian fans. She intended on fulfilling her contract and is trying hard to do the responsible thing, but this is beyond her control."
The trip had been planned long in advance of Hilton's August arrest in Las Vegas, when police found nearly a gram of cocaine in her purse. She received a one-year suspended sentence, was fined $2,000 and ordered to do 200 hours of community service.
