Are NFL star Tom Brady and his wife, supermodel Gisele Bündchen splitting up?

People magazine, citing anonymous sources, said Tuesday that Bündchen has hired a divorce attorney after months of tension since Brady — who as quarterback of the Patriots and the Buccaneers became the first NFL pro to win seven Super Bowls — rejoined the National Football League after a 40-day retirement. He is back with the Buccaneers, who are 2-2 this season after losing to Kansas City 41-31 on Sunday.

"She was so happy when he announced his retirement, and she wasn't thrilled at all when he went back on that," the source told People. "They're hitting a rough patch," the source added. "But I know they're trying, or at least he's trying, to figure it out and make it work. He wants to get through this and for things to get better."

Brady, 45, and Bündchen, 42, were first seen together publicly in early 2007. They married in a small Catholic ceremony in Santa Monica, California, in February 2009, with a second, larger wedding that April at Bündchen's estate in Costa Rica. It was a first marriage for both. They have two children: son Benjamin, 12, and daughter Vivian, 9.

Brady as well has a son, Jack Moynahan, 15, with actor Bridget Moynahan. Two months after the end of their relationship in 2006, the "Blue Bloods" star revealed she was pregnant.

Brady in 2015 deflated rumors he and his German-Brazilian wife had undergone serious marital difficulties during his then-recent NFL suspension.

"We're in a great place, so I'll just say that,” he told the Boston radio station WEEI/93.7 FM at the time, after Us Weekly had reported Bündchen had consulted with a divorce lawyer after Brady became irritable and argumentative in the wake of the four-game suspension, which was eventually overturned that year. (His suspension was later reinstated, and he missed four games in the 2016 season.) Brady went on to say, "I've been very blessed to have an incredible relationship with my life partner, y'know? I don't think anything will ever get in the way of that."

Representatives for the couple and for the Buccaneers did not immediately respond to Newsday requests for comment.
