Alex Trebek is scheduled to return to host "Jeopardy!" next week, after having torn his Achilles tendon chasing an alleged hotel burglar early Wednesday morning.

"He's doing well," a "Jeopardy!" spokesman told Newsday. "Our taping resumes Tuesday and he's planning on coming back for that." Using crutches and a wheelchair, Trebek, 71, hosted the National Geographic World Championship at Google headquarters as scheduled Wednesday.

On the "Today" show Thursday, he described what happened, telling host Matt Lauer, "I woke up and saw a figure in our hotel bedroom" at the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco, where he was staying with his wife. "And I thought I was dreaming and I realized immediately that someone had been in the room. And I . . . ran down the hall to see if I could find her."

Trebek confronted Lucinda Moyers, 56, whom police later arrested and described as having a long criminal record. "She came out of the little room where the ice machine is," Trebek told Lauer, "and I said, 'What were you doing in our room?' And she said, 'I wasn't in your room.' I said, 'What are you doing here?' She said, 'I was visiting friends,' and I said, 'No, you weren't.' "

Somewhere along the way, he noted, "I crashed to the ground, but I managed to hobble back to the phone and informed security."

Trebek was originally reported to be having surgery Friday, but now no specific date has been set.
