Film star Will Smith, currently shooting "Men in Black III" in Manhattan, moved his two-story-tall, 53- foot-long, 30-ton, 1,150-square-foot trailer from the corner of Broome and Greene streets in Soho Wednesday after complaints from the cramped neighborhood.
The Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting yesterday deemed that trailer and and a second one housing Smith's gym too obstructive. "To balance the interests of the production and the neighborhood, we have instructed 'Men in Black III' to relocate the trailer to a private lot," the office said.
The trailers were on the move by 4 p.m. Smith's trailer was taken to a Central Parking System on Dominick Street between Hudson and Varick streets, said DNAInfo.com. The whereabouts of the portable gym -- which Darrell Foster of Omega Bodies Inc., the company that manages it, said was for the use of all the crew -- was unknown as of last night.
Ironically, Smith himself lives nearby, in a plush five-bedroom rental at 25 Bond St.
But he does love his land whales. A fan of the luxury trailer customizer Anderson Mobile Estates, Smith in 2000 bought the company's Aspen model, probably the biggest movie trailer made at that time. Then in 2003 he traded up to the new, even larger Babygirl. This latest behemoth is called The Heat.
And despite its size, it didn't bring down any official heat. While the mayor's office did ask that it be moved after complaints began coming in, Associate Commissioner Julianne Cho had earlier said it hadn't broken any city regulations.
Meanwhile, The Daily yesterday reported that Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, would be the guests on Oprah Winfrey's final show, on May 25. The iPad newspaper also speculated that the Smiths' children, Jaden and Willow, would appear. Winfrey's production company, Harpo, declined to comment.
