The past year gave us the births of Mariah Carey's twins, Charlie Sheen's misadventures and the start (and end) of Kim Kardashian's marriage. What earthshaking stories can we expect in 2012?
FINAL 'TWILIGHT' MOVIE
While the fourth film, 2011's "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1," earned less than each of its two immediate predecessors, it still grossed more than $656.4 million worldwide. If the billion-dollar-plus "Harry Potter" finale is any indication, the climactic "Part 2," set for Nov. 16, could set a series record.
LINDSAY LOHAN'S PROGRESS
The actress, raised in Merrick and Cold Spring Harbor, suffered a tempestuous 2011. But now, at 25, the "Mean Girls" star may be moving past her troubled early twenties. She earned kudos last month from a judge who anticipates Lohan will finally put her legal issues behind her by March. And whatever may or may not happen with her involvement in the film "Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father," the issue of Playboy with her pictorial is a sellout hit. Wherever her career takes her in 2012, we'll all be taking notice.
BRITNEY SPEARS' MARRIAGE
The pop princess, 30, is engaged to her former talent agent, Jason Trawick, 40, who grew up in Holbrook and graduated from Sachem North High School in Lake Ronkonkoma. And who knows: Perhaps the son of Setauket's William T. and Susan Trawick will tie the knot this year at Oheka Castle or one of our other picturesque locales.
JESSICA SIMPSON'S BABY
The singer and fashion/beauty-product entrepreneur, 31, looked far along in her pregnancy when she announced it on Halloween. Simpson and her fiance, former NFL player Eric Johnson, are expecting their child early this year.
MOVIE AWARDS AND THEIR HOSTS
After Ricky Gervais' mocking irreverence as host of the Golden Globes last year, Hollywood said he'd never host again. But he's scored big ratings two years in a row, so they're welcoming him back on Jan. 15. And after this year's scheduled Oscars host, Eddie Murphy, left in a huff, and with last year's panned James Franco-Anne Hathaway team still in people's minds, we're all welcoming back Long Beach's Billy Crystal come February.
