Happy 20th birthday, 'Beverly Hills, 90210'

Twenty years ago today, sideburns returned to pop-culture cool. We have Brandon Walsh and Dylan McKay to thank for that.

"Beverly Hills, 90210" -- the show that gave us The Peach Pit, an appreciation for classic sports cars and "Donna Martin graduates!" -- debuted on Fox on Oct. 4, 1990.

For a good segment of the population -- us thirtysomethings -- this is strange news. Are we that old already? Yes. But it seems like just yesterday when Steve Sanders was getting into trouble at school with the principal, Mrs. T; when every guy I knew wanted to date Kelly Taylor; when struggling-to-fit-in Scott accidentally shot himself; when David Silver was still on the outside looking in at the cool crowd; when Emily Valentine was singing "Breaking Up is Hard to Do"; when it was Dylan and Brenda; when there was no more Brenda; when Brandon learned that drunk driving was the stupidest thing a teenager can do; when Kelly Kipowski (Tiffani-Amber Thiessen) became Valerie Malone.

They just don't make teen shows like this anymore -- an hour-long issue of the day show set in a swanky SoCal location that feels relatable to teens and tweens across the entire country. Now we just get the silliness that is the name-recognition spinoff "90210." That's like telling people you met Joey Travolta instead of John.
