Karen O to perform 'Moon Song' from 'Her' at Oscars 2014
The last musical shoe has dropped with the Academy's announcement that Karen O will perform her Oscar-nominated track “The Moon Song,” from the Spike Jonze film “Her,” during the awards ceremony. The other Oscar nominees for best original song, whose appearances have already been confirmed, include Pharrell Williams (“Happy,” from the animated film “Despicable Me”), U2 (“Ordinary Love,” from the bio-pic “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”) and Idina Menzel (“Let It Go,” from Disney's animated fairy-tale “Frozen”).
Karen O may add a little underground edge to the Oscars, or perhaps the Oscars will push the singer further into the mainstream. Her band, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, have been longtime staples of New York City's indie rock scene, and Karen O was once infamous for spitting beer on her audience. Yeah Yeah Yeahs have been nominated for several Grammys.
Karen O also co-wrote original songs for the soundtrack of Jonze’s 2009 film “Where the Wild Things Are,” earning a Grammy nomination for the song “All Is Love.” She has performed on various film soundtracks, including for “Frankenweenie,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “I’m Not There.”
