Don't get too excited, "Law & Order" fans. Don't hold your breath either. Don't - in fact - do anything.

Just read:

"Law & Order" could be saved.

Canceled by NBC last week after 20 years on the air, and according to just about anyone you ask, canceled way too soon, the show's creator, Dick Wolf, Tuesday released this cryptic statement:

"The patient is not dead. It is in a medically induced coma, and we are hoping for a cure."

"Law & Order" as "patient"?

In a "coma," and a "medically induced" one at that?

(Sorry reader, this is Hollywood. People talk funny out there sometimes.)

In fact, Wolf has been fighting to save a show that generated an estimated $80 million (per a Reuters story) in New York revenue per year, and has employed many thousands of New York-based actors.

It remains a fine, intelligent program with an excellent cast; some shows are worth saving and this is certainly one of them.

Wolf wants his 21st season and the record ("Gunsmoke" lasted 20).

Fans?

They'd be happy just to see it go on.

Wolf is reportedly in talks to take the show to a cable network (TNT has been rumored) though a wrap movie has been discussed as well.

A spokeswoman late Tuesday declined to elaborate beyond Wolf's statement.
