“Showing the world how it is” is what Kevin C. Downs has set out to do over his decadeslong career as a photojournalist. In the exhibit, “Documentary Photography Now,” he enlists 23 visual storytellers to help him. The gamut of reality reflected runs from Tehran-based Fatemeh Behboudi’s image of a burqa-clad woman with a tote sporting a female portrait to one of Italian photographer Alfredo Bini’s shots of the crumbling New York City subway system. Cultures mix with regard to both subjects and shutter clickers in other images recording life in a litany of far-flung locales, including West Africa, Japan, Russia, Latin America, the Middle East and the West Coast.

The great American playwright Tennessee Williams took the splintered shards of his own upbringing to create his breakthrough masterpiece, “The Glass Menagerie.” In 2016, Studio Theatre audiences glimpsed the real-life story on which Williams based his first Broadway success in the premiere of Plainview writer Claude Solnik’s “Year of the Iguana;” now they can discern fact from fiction in the theater’s production of the Williams classic. The relationships among the playwright, his proud mother and mentally fragile sister, Rose, are mirrored in the Wingfield family characters and their easily broken dreams.
