What do "Salt," "Batman Forever" and "The Godfather" all have in common? They were filmed on Long Island. Yes, that's right. New York City isn't the only mecca for moviemakers. I've compiled a list of nearly 50 movies in which LI played a starring role.

Some fun facts:

• In "The Godfather," the scene depicting the killing of Sonny (James Caan) was filmed at an abandoned runway at Mitchel Field in East Garden City.

• Webb Institute provided the setting for some scenes in "Batman Forever."

• Angelina Jolie was injured while filming an action sequence for "Salt" and was treated at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.

There's some pretty cool stuff on this map, so go ahead ... beat your chest and be proud of our film history on the Island.

While you're at it, tell us why your local movie theater is the best. I want to know your picks for movie theaters with comfy seats, delicious snacks, fun for kids, a scene for adults, etc.  Your tips could be featured on Newsday.com or ExploreLI.com.
