Barrymore, Long co-star off-screen, too
In "Going the Distance," Drew Barrymore gets to co-star with on-again/off-again boyfriend Justin Long, with whom she previously appeared in the 2009 ensemble comedy "He's Just Not That Into You." The pair agree their real-life familiarity helped them create a believable chemistry between their characters.
"It was lucky for me because he's a good kisser," says Barrymore. "The worst for me is kissing someone who is not a good kisser, and you're trying to make it look good, and you feel you're just working on your own. At least it was a real team effort."
"She's a great kisser, too," Long adds.
A scene involving phone sex was uncomfortable for both actors, who filmed their scenes simultaneously in side-by-side sets on a sound stage.
"It was just one of those scenes where you have to go for it," says Barrymore, who doesn't hold back in her performance.
"Drew had it more awkward," Long says, "because she said (the production crew) in the room was being stone-cold silent and respectful, which just made it that much weirder for her."
