‘Baywatch’ trailer drops, showing Zac Efron, Dwayne Johnson butting heads
Paramount Pictures released the long-awaited “Baywatch” trailer on Thursday. Star Dwayne Johnson also sent the trailer out through his Twitter feed Thursday morning.
Based on the 1990s television show, which was criticized, yet quite popular, for its gratuitous shots of buxom women in barely-there bikinis, “Baywatch” stars Johnson as a hunky lifeguard who begins to investigate a murder. Zac Efron plays a new lifeguard brought in to help reinvigorate the “Baywatch brand,” as one character puts it. The trailer doesn’t skimp on footage of bouncing beach-babes, though in fairness, Johnson and Efron show plenty of skin as well.
“Baywatch” is clearly modeled after the “21 Jump Street” comedies, which also spoofed a campy old television show while re-launching it for a new generation. Self-mocking humor abounds, and the movie reportedly features David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, two stars of the original show.
“Baywatch” arrives in theaters May 26.
The trailer contains language and subject matter unsuitable for newsday.com, but users can watch it on Paramount Pictures’ YouTube channel.
