‘Beauty and the Beast’ trailer finally offers good look at Emma Watson as Belle
Emma Watson’s fans can get a peek at her biggest role since the “Harry Potter” films in a trailer for Disney’s upcoming live-action remake, “Beauty and the Beast.”
The two-minute trailer was posted online by Disney Monday morning.
Although a teaser for the film appeared several months ago, it showed barely a glimpse of Watson, whose face remained mostly hidden behind a rose. This new trailer is our first long look at Watson as Belle, a living, breathing version of the animated heroine of Disney’s Oscar-winning 1991 musical “Beauty and the Beast.” Dan Stevens co-stars as the hairy Beast who lives alone in a splendid but gloomy castle.
Much of the trailer is devoted to that castle, which itself played a starring role in the original film. (The famous ballroom scene used computers to enhance the traditional ink-and-paint animation, a technique unheard of in 1991.) We also get to meet the dark castle’s charming — and magically charmed — inhabitants, including the French candlestick Lumiere (the voice of Ewan McGregor) and the kindly teapot Mrs. Potts (Emma Thompson).
As for Watson, she has much of the same pluck and charm that she displayed as Hermione Grainger in the “Potter” films. She looks mostly plainly dressed and fresh-scrubbed, without any of the glowing makeup that Lily Collins wore in Disney’s live-action “Cinderella,” but surely we’ll see a more glamorous version of Belle when she dresses for a formal dance with her Beast.
And how is Watson’s singing voice? Alas, this trailer doesn’t let us know. Directed by Bill Condon (the musical “Chicago,” the final “Twilight” films), “Beauty and the Beast” is slated for release March 17, 2017, roughly the same time frame as Disney’s two other live-action remakes, last year’s “Cinderella” and this year’s “The Jungle Book.”
