Billy Porter to play James Baldwin in upcoming biopic

Two-time Tony Award-winning Broadway actor-producer and Emmy-winning "Pose" star Billy Porter will portray the late, gay literary legend and Civil Rights activist James Baldwin in a biographical drama, Allen Media Group Motion Pictures announced Wednesday.
Porter also will co-write the movie with screenwriter-playwright Dan McCabe, adapting David Leeming's 1994 book “James Baldwin: A Biography.” “As a Black queer man on this planet with relative consciousness," Porter, 53, said in a statement, "I find myself, like James Baldwin said, ‘in a rage all the time.’ I am because James was. I stand on James Baldwin’s shoulders, and I intend to expand his legacy for generations to come.” No director or anticipated production date were announced.
Baldwin's works include the novels “Go Tell It on the Mountain” (1953) and “Giovanni’s Room” (1956), and the nonfiction books "Notes of a Native Son" (1955) and “The Fire Next Time” (1963).
