Fresh off its win at the Screen Actors Guild awards and just in time for Black History Month, the Disney-Marvel hit “Black Panther” will return to 250 AMC theaters nationwide with free screenings for one week in February.
That’s right — free. “To ensure that the movie is accessible to all,” said the Walt Disney Company, “tickets are free for everyone, and there will be two showings per day at each participating theater.”
Locally, “Black Panther” will play at 4 and 7 p.m. daily, Feb. 1-7, at the AMC Loews Stony Brook 17. To get the free tickets, go to weticketit.com/blackpanther.
The first superhero movie of the modern era with a black lead character, “Black Panther” marked a watershed cultural moment last year and also became a box-office phenomenon, going on to earn $1.34 billion worldwide. It broke a number of records, becoming the highest-grossing superhero film in the United States, the highest-grossing film by a black director (Ryan Coogler) and the ninth highest-grossing film of all time. It also became the first superhero film to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award. At the Screen Actors Guild awards this past weekend, “Black Panther” won Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
The Walt Disney Co. also announced it will give a $1.5 million grant to support the United Negro College Fund.
