Patrick Dempsey replaces Hugh Grant — sort of — in the trailer for “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” the third film in the popular rom-com series with Renée Zellweger in the title role. The trailer arrived online Wednesday.

Grant’s character, the abusive but attractive Daniel Cleaver, formed a love triangle with Bridget and Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) in the first two films but is nowhere to be seen in this trailer. Instead, the perpetually single Jones strikes up a relationship with a handsome fellow played by Dempsey. (They meet when she slips and falls in a giant puddle of mud.) Meanwhile, Darcy is now out of Bridget’s life but not entirely out of her bed, which means one of these two men is responsible for Bridget’s unexpected pregnancy.

The original film’s director, Sharon Maguire, is back behind the camera for this installment. Emma Thompson, who appears in the trailer as a doctor, is reportedly a co-writer.

“Bridget Jones’s Baby” is due in theaters Sept. 16.
