'Crazy Rich Asians' sequel in the works

A week after its release, the hit romcom "Crazy Rich Asians" may already be spawning a sequel.
The Hollywood Reporter said Wednesday that Warner Bros. is taking preliminary steps toward greenlighting "China Rich Girlfriend," the second book in novelist Kevin Kwan's trilogy, which the studio already had optioned along with 2017's "Rich People Problems." Director Jon M. Chu and screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim would return for this follow-up to the first Hollywood studio film with an Asian lead cast since 1993's "The Joy Luck Club."
Since opening on Aug. 15, "Crazy Rich Asians" has grossed nearly $45 million domestically, and had the biggest debut weekend of any romantic comedy since Amy Schumer's "Trainwreck" three years ago. The movie stars Contance Wu of ABC's "Fresh Off the Boat" as native New Yorker Rachel Chu who heads to Singapore to meet the immensely wealthy family of her boyfriend, Nick Young, played by Henry Golding.
