The upcoming 23rd Hamptons International Film Festival will include two new programs and a name change to an old one.

A new showcase called Compassion, Justice & Animal Rights will consist of three narrative or documentary films that "look to awaken respect for the dignity and rights of living beings," according to festival organizers. Included in this year's inaugural program will be Darcy Dennett's documentary "The Champions," which follows the pit bulls rescued from the fighting ring of NFL quarterback Michael Vick.

Another first for the festival will be highlighting selections from PLURAL+, a short-film festival that focuses on themes of "migration, diversity, and social inclusion." The shorts will be screened throughout the Hamptons festival and throughout the year at East End schools.

The panel discussion series Rowdy Talks, held mornings at the restaurant Rowdy Hall, will be renamed the Winick Talks at Rowdy Hall, in honor of the filmmaker Gary Winick ("Tadpole," "13 Going on 30") who in 2011 died of brain cancer at the age of 49. The series will be supported by the The Gary Winick Memorial Fund.

The Hamptons International Film Festival is scheduled to run Oct. 8-12.
