Calvin Klein model and "Once Upon a Time" recurring player Jamie Dornan is replacing Charlie Hunnam in the film adaptation of E.L. James' erotic best-seller "Fifty Shades of Grey."

Variety reported that Universal Pictures and Focus Features picked the Belfast-raised actor over Tony Award-nominee Billy Magnussen of Broadway's "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike" after both actors tested with director Sam Taylor-Johnson on Friday.

Universal and Focus have not commented on Variety's report. The film is scheduled for release Aug. 1.

"Sons of Anarchy" star Hunnam -- who in September was cast as 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey alongside Dakota Johnson as Anastastia Steele, the college student with whom he has a sadomasochistic affair -- left the project earlier this month. Universal cited "Hunnam's immersive TV schedule, which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role," though industry observers also pointed to an unenthusiastic response by "Fifty Shades" fans to his casting.

Outside the United States, Dornan, 31, is best known as Gillian Anderson's serial-killer antagonist in the BBC crime drama "The Fall." In addition to modeling for Calvin Klein, Dornan has posed for Christian Dior and Armani.

He met actress Keira Knightley on a photo shoot for the luxury-goods company Asprey in 2003, according to the Belfast Telegraph, and they dated for two years. People magazine said in 2006 he was later linked to actress Lindsay Lohan. In April, Dornan wed actress-singer Amelia Warner -- who was previously married to Colin Farrell before separating after four months -- and the couple confirmed in June they were expecting a child together.
