WHO Lindsey Morgan
THE MOVIE “Lasso”
THE DEAL The actress known as Raven Reyes on The CW sci-fi show “The 100” will star in an indie thriller, Variety reports. “Lasso” tells the story of two people working at a senior center who suddenly find themselves under attack by bloodthirsty cowboys from the local rodeo. The unusual-sounding film also stars Andrew Jacobs, of “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.” Evan Cecil will direct from a script by Roberto Marinas.
THE MOVIE “The Martian”
THE DEAL Ridley Scott’s movie starring Matt Damon as a stranded astronaut may go down in history as the last drama to be weirdly classified as a comedy by the Golden Globes. According to Deadline.com, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has changed its voting rules to include a mandate that “dramas with comedic overtones should be entered as dramas.” The association became the butt of jokes at its own ceremony earlier this year after deciding — reportedly by a single vote — that “The Martian” was a comedy.
THE MOVIE “Sing Street”
THE DEAL The music-themed comedy-drama from John Carney (“Once”) got off to a slow start at the box office last weekend despite rave reviews, according to TheWrap.com. The story of Dublin teens who start a New Wave band during the 1980s (the soundtrack includes A-ha, Spandau Ballet and others), “Sing Street” pulled in just $69,000 at five theaters even though critics called it “fantastic,” “marvelous” and “a ragtag musical charmer.” By contrast, another well-reviewed youth-culture film, “Green Room,” earned $91,000 at just three theaters. That film stars Patrick Stewart as a neo-Nazi who terrorizes a hard-core punk band. Both movies are set to open locally April 29.
