WHO Elijah Wood
THE MOVIE "Cooties"
THE DEAL Lionsgate earlier this week appeared to be the front-runner in negotiations to buy "Cooties," a horror comedy starring Wood and Rainn Wilson, according to Deadline.com. The film, about high school faculty hunkering down against a zombie pandemic, premiered Saturday in the midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival. Written by Ian Brennan (Fox's "Glee") and Leigh Whannell ("Saw"), the movie marks Wood's unexpected drift toward horror and genre fare like the recent slasher film "Maniac" and the upcoming thriller "Grand Piano." Wood also is a producer on "Cooties."
WHO Mark Ruffalo
THE MOVIE "Infinitely Polar Bear"
THE DEAL In other news from Sundance, Ruffalo's indie drama has been courted by Sony Classics, Fox Searchlight and other studios for a price in the mid-seven-figure range, according to TheWrap.com. The film, set in the late 1970s, stars Ruffalo as a manic-depressive man trying to win back his wife and two difficult daughters. Ruffalo has been alternating indie films with Hollywood fare recently, starring in the sex-addiction dramedy "Thanks for Sharing," the big-budget caper flick "Now You See Me" and the superhero smash "Marvel's The Avengers." He plays a record producer in the upcoming indie "Can a Song Save Your Life?," which sold to the Weinstein Co. for a reported $7 million at last year's Toronto International Film Festival.
THE MOVIE "Flesh"
THE DEAL Kristin Ross Lauterbach's documentary, subtitled "Bought and Sold in the U.S.," gives voice to human trafficking victims, prostitutes and the people who are fighting the illegal industries. The movie is being presented by the Huntington Chapter of the League of Women Voters, with guest speaker Deanna Croce, training and outreach manager for Safe Horizon.
INFO Thursday night at 7:30 at Cinema Arts Centre, 423 Park Ave., Huntington. Tickets are $15; 631-423-7611, cinemaartscentre.org.
