Long Island International Film Expo unreels this week

The 29th annual Long Island International Film Expo begins Tuesday with a lineup of 113 mostly short films from around the world and here at home. The festival runs through Sunday at the Bellmore Movies and Showplace.
As in the past, the competition organizes its screenings into blocks of roughly two hours. Feature-length films may be paired with a short or two, while short-film programs are sometimes grouped together by theme. There are student film blocks and documentary blocks, for example, though other shorts programs are grab bags, with titles that vary in subject matter and maturity level.
One hourlong documentary with a local angle, "Ringside in the Mountains," focuses on the bygone boxing training camps of the Catskills where such fighters as Roberto Durán; James Braddock, portrayed by Russell Crowe in the 2005 biopic "Cinderella Man"; and Huntington’s Gerry Cooney got in shape. One of its producers was Tommy Clohessy, of Huntington, who died before the film's completion.
In addition to the lineup of movies, the expo offers a number of filmmaking workshops, including a Directors Audition Panel in which actors are invited to read for filmmakers; a table reading of a screenplay; and a filmmakers breakfast panel, titled "The Good, the Bad and the Horror Stories of Indie Filmmaking."
