Movie Buzz: A star is reborn

THE MOVIE "Young Adult"
THE DEAL The South African-born actress, lately seen in supporting roles ("Hancock," "The Road"), will take the lead in this comedy about a writer of teen fiction who decides to relive her high-school days. Co-stars include Patrick Wilson ("Watchmen") as an ex-boyfriend and Patton Oswalt ("Big Fan") as a former classmate stuck in the past. Jason Reitman ("Up in the Air") directs; Diablo Cody ("Juno") is the screenwriter and producer. The film is due in theaters Dec. 9.
THE MOVIE "Rejoice & Shout"
THE DEAL This highly praised documentary traces the story of gospel music from its beginnings in slavery to its role in the civil rights movement and its still-audible influence in today's R&B and hip-hop. Joe Lauro, the film's Sag Harbor-based producer, will appear in person at next week's screening.

THE MOVIE "From the Sky Down"
THE DEAL This film about the Irish supergroup, from Oscar-winner Davis Guggenheim ("An Inconvenient Truth"), marks the first time that a documentary will open the Toronto International Film Festival, which kicks off its 36th year Sept. 8. The other major rock-doc at the festival is "Pearl Jam Twenty," billed as the "definitive portrait" of the enduring grunge-rock band from director Cameron Crowe (another Oscar winner, for his "Almost Famous" screenplay). Pop music fans also may be interested in the North American premiere of "W.E.," a historical drama directed by Madonna. For more information, see tiff.net.
