 THE DEAL Several movies about the '90s-era rocker Jeff Buckley have been in the works, but this one could be the first out of the gate. Tribeca Film and Focus World announced earlier this week that they have acquired U.S. rights to the movie, which is scheduled for release next year. Newcomer Ben Rosenfield plays the title role, a 1960s troubadour who died of a drug overdose in 1975; <a href="/topics//Penn_Badgley">Badgley</a> ("Margin Call") will play Buckley's soaringly talented son, Jeff, who drowned in 1997. Dan Algrant ("People I Know") co-wrote and directed.

He could be in the running for another with "<a href="/topics//John_Barrymore">Barrymore</a>." It's the film version of a 1997 stage play in which Plummer, now 82, played legendary actor <a href="/topics//John_Barrymore">John Barrymore</a> -- a role that earned Plummer a Tony. "Barrymore," directed by Érik Canuel, has had a very limited release but has received rave reviews from some critics; it will screen twice locally this month.
