THE MOVIE "The Big Uneasy"

THE DEAL The renowned humorist and New Orleans resident comes to Long Island for a screening of this decidedly serious documentary, which he directed. The film examines Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, paying close attention to the subsequent responses from politicians, the government and the media.

THE DEAL The actor-filmmaker accepted a Creative Achievement Award at last Thursday's closing night of the 14th annual Long Island International Film Expo. Other awards handed out included Best Feature Film for the Irish drama "As If I Am Not There," Best Long Island Feature Film for the tribute-band documentary "Long Island Uncovered" (from Bellmore's Sal Del Giudice) and the Audience Award for "Jesse," a crime-drama from tireless Shirley filmmaker Fred Carpenter. "True to the Heart," a rock and roll romantic comedy directed and co-written by Plainview's Mitchell Kase, took home four awards, including Best First Feature.


THE MOVIE "Brief Encounter"

THE DEAL A local miniseries of British classics continues with this 1945 David Lean romance, in which a lonely housewife (Celia Johnson) tells the story of her illicit affair. The cast includes Trevor Howard, Stanley Holloway and Cyril Raymond; film historian Irene Eckert will be on hand to discuss the film. The series continues with the black comedy "Kind Hearts and Coronets" Aug. 9.
