Now that Osama bin Laden is dead at the hands of Navy SEAL Team 6, you might be wondering: Why the SEALs? In the movies, at least, isn't it usually some shadowy "black ops" team?

Of all the U.S. military divisions, the SEALs are one of the most underrepresented on-screen. They're a highly elite group -- about 250 men complete training each year, according to the official website -- and the general public remains vague about what SEALs do. (The name stands for SEa, Air and Land.) We may start seeing more of them in theaters, but for now here's a short list of SEALs on screen:

THE ROCK (1996) -- When a rogue Marine (Ed Harris) commandeers Alcatraz with a doomsday plan, the SEALs are called in, joined by a chemical-weapons expert (Nicolas Cage) and a former Alcatraz prisoner (Sean Connery).

TEARS OF THE SUN (2003) -- More proof that SEALs are everywhere: Bruce Willis leads a team into Nigeria to rescue an American doctor (Monica Bellucci).

G.I. JANE (1997) -- The Navy didn't cooperate with this fictional film about the first woman (Demi Moore) to enter a SEALs-esque training program. The problem wasn't gender, but scenes of superior officers maltreating recruits.

UNDER SIEGE (1992) -- A group of mercenaries attacks a Navy battleship. Fortunately, the cook (Steven Seagal, right) used to be a SEAL.

NAVY SEALS (1990) -- Two facts about this Charlie Sheen movie: One, it pitted the SEALs against Middle Eastern terrorists. And two, according to critic Leonard Maltin, Sheen's character has "the maturity level of Dennis the Menace." Overall, then, rather prescient.
