Mineola looked a lot like sunny California Monday, as Al Pacino, Helen Mirren and almost 200 extras rolled in to film a scene for an upcoming HBO movie.
That is, until the dramatic hailstorm moved in after 4 p.m., pelting down on the palm trees that were meant to make the Nassau County Courthouse look like the one in Los Angeles, and leaving Producer Michael Hausman and writer-director David Mamet scrambling for shelter under the courthouse overhang.
A staff member on the set of the movie, a biopic about record producer-turned-murderer Phil Spector, said the crew was trying to make the best of a bad situation by shooting tight shots of Pacino, who plays Spector, and Mirren, who plays one of his lawyers, Linda Kenney Baden. The crew will return Tuesday for a second day of shooting.
Spector was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2003 fatal shooting of actress Lana Clarkson in his home near Los Angeles.
