Patty Jenkins’ ‘Wonder Woman’ among top female-directed films

Gal Gadot may be the star of “Wonder Woman,” but the person who really deserves that title is the movie’s director, Patty Jenkins. With a domestic gross of $100.5 million on its first weekend, “Wonder Woman” scored the biggest opening weekend for a film helmed by a female.

SAM TAYLOR-JOHNSON, “Fifty Shades of Grey” (2015) Critics may have thought the S&M flick was torture, but audiences flocked to the theater. The odd romance whipped up $85.2 million in ticket sales on its Valentine’s Day weekend opening.
CATHERINE HARDWICKE, “Twilight” (2008) The teen vampire saga based on Stephenie Meyer’s bestseller had a bloody good first weekend gross of $69.6 million. Three equally successful films followed.
ELIZABETH BANKS, “Pitch Perfect 2” (2015) Banks, who also co-stars as commentator Gail, took the reins from Jason Moore, who directed the first film. The sequel took in a lot more dough-re-mi ($69.2 million) on its opening weekend than its predecessor ($5.1 million).
JENNIFER LEE, “Frozen” (2013) Lee was co-director with Chris Buck on this animated smash that made an avalanche of money, starting with $67.4 million over Thanksgiving weekend.
