Rick Rubin, the Long Beach native and influential producer who has worked with everyone from Adele to Jay-Z, will be the next subject of Oscar-winning documentarian Morgan Neville.

Neville — whose most recent project was last year’s buzzed-about look at Fred Rogers, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” — plans to show an early cut of the Rubin documentary “Shangri-La” at the South by Southwest conference in March. The finished product is set to air as a series on Showtime later this year.

The documentary will focus on Rubin’s Shangri-La studio in California and, according to Showtime, will be “an all-access pass into Rubin’s creative process, giving viewers a taste of what it’s like to be produced by the music world’s most singular voice.”

However, it’s expected to cover Rubin’s entire music career, including when he co-founded Def Jam Records while still a student at NYU, launching the careers of Manhasset’s LL Cool J and Roosevelt’s Public Enemy. In their recent autobiography “Book,” the Beastie Boys talk about spending the night at Rubin’s parents’ house in Lido Beach before shooting the video for their hit “She’s on It” on Long Beach.

Rubin’s work as a producer has continued for decades, helming projects for an eclectic range of artists, from Johnny Cash to Kanye West, and current pop stars including Lady Gaga and Ed Sheeran.
