The first teaser trailer for "Spider-Man: Far From Home" introduces Jake Gyllenhaal as the supervillain Mysterio, reveals that Peter Parker's Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) approves of her nephew's superhero identity, and shows Peter (Tom Holland), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) all intact despite disintegrating in "Avengers: Infinity War." Sony Pictures released the trailer online Tuesday after debuting it Dec. 8 at the Brazil convention Comic Con Experience (CCXP).
In this sequel to 2017's "Spider-Man: Homecoming," high schooler Peter and classmates Ned (Jacob Batalon), MJ (Zendaya) and Flash (Tony Revolori) visit Europe on what appears to be a school-related summer trip. While there, Nick Fury recruits a reluctant Peter for an unspecified "job" having to do with an explosion at the London Bridge and monsters representing the four elements of fire, water, earth and air.
Mysterio — in the comics, a special-effects genius who creates disorienting illusions — appears in Venice to fight one of the creatures in what seems a superheroic gesture. One character describes him looking "like Iron Man and Thor rolled into one."
In other moments, Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) and Peter's Aunt May flirt, as do Peter and MJ, and a visit to the passport office reveals Peter's birthdate as Aug. 10. The movie additionally gives us Spider-Man's dark "stealth suit" costume as well as a gliding wingsuit.
The trailer gives no indication whether the story takes place before or after "Avengers: Infinity War," in which Spider-Man and numerous others meet their seeming deaths at the hands of megalomaniac Thanos. "Spider-Man: Far From Home" reaches theaters July 5, about two months after "Avengers: Endgame" concludes the "Infinity War" story on April 26.
