Warner Bros.' dark superhero drama "The Batman," which has grossed nearly $760 million worldwide since its release March 1, is getting a sequel.
"Toby Emmerich, Chairman of @wbpictures, announces @mattreevesLA will be taking audiences back to Gotham with a new installment of @TheBatman," said the Twitter account for the industry trade show CinemaCon, where the announcement was made Tuesday. Emmerich told the audience of theater owners that director and co-screenwriter Matt Reeves "took one of our most iconic and beloved superheroes and delivered a fresh vision," according to a transcription in The Hollywood Reporter, adding that Reeves, Rob Pattinson "and the entire team will be taking audiences back to Gotham with 'The Batman 2.' " No release time frame was given.
"The Batman," the latest iteration of the much-filmed DC Comics superhero franchise, stars Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Andy Serkis as butler Alfred, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, and Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano and John Turturro as other allies and villains in the canon. Reeves has not commented publicly on the planned sequel.
