Goth hacker Lisbeth Salander from “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is returning to the big screen.
Sony Pictures announced Monday that the cult-favorite character — played by Noomi Rapace in the original Swedish film and two sequels, and by Rooney Mara in the 2011 American version — will be played by a new actress in “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” based on David Lagercrantz’s best-selling novel.
Fede Alvarez, director of the well-received 2016 thriller “Don’t Breathe,” will co-write the screenplay and direct. This will be the book series’ first film adaptation to premiere in an English-language version.
The movie is scheduled for release Oct. 5, 2018, with production set to begin this September.
