WHO Roman Polanski
THE FILM "Venus in Fur"
THE DEAL The latest film from the 79-year-old writer-director will open Italy's Ischia Global Fest, which begins Thursday night on a small island in the Gulf of Naples. The film, about a cunning actress (played by Polanski's wife, Emmanuelle Seigner) who tries to manipulate a director (Mathieu Amalric) into giving her a part, takes its name from the 1870 novella by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, namesake of the fetish known as S&M. "Venus in Fur" played at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year to positive reviews, though no U.S. release date has yet been announced.
WHO Fleetwood Mac
THE DEAL The long-running British-American rock band comes to the big screen next week when Freeport archivist Bill Shelley presents a collection of filmed concert appearances in Japan, Europe and America, plus clips of television appearances and promotional films. The nearly two-hour program will unfold in roughly chronological order, following the band from its early incarnation with guitarists Peter Green and Bob Welch, and continuing through the chart-topping lineup that included keyboardist Christine McVie and the star-crossed duo of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Among the songs featured will be "Black Magic Woman," "Albatross," "Rhiannon," "Go Your Own Way," "Gypsy," "Tusk" and "Sara."
INFO Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Cinema Arts Centre, 423 Park Ave., Huntington. Tickets are $15. 800-838-3006; cinemaartscentre.org
THE MOVIE "The Purge"
THE DEAL The home-invasion flick that stunned Hollywood with last weekend's impressive $36-million opening is already spawning a sequel, according to reports. Starring Ethan Hawke as a man living in a future America where all crime is legal for one night each year, "The Purge" overcame a limited ad campaign and largely negative reviews to become the week's No. 1 movie. Universal Pictures and producer Jason Blum will re-team for the sequel, though it isn't clear whether writer-director James DeMonaco will return. Hawke's unexpected foray into the horror genre might be explained by his 20-year friendship with Blum, who previously collaborated with Hawke on the 2012 film "Sinister." Blum also helped produce the "Paranormal Activity" franchise.
