The trailer for the ninth film in the "X-Men" franchise arrived online Friday with glimpses of Oscar Isaac as a new -- but also very old -- villain.

Isaac is barely recognizable as Apocalypse, history’s first mutant. In a plotline that seems to have supernatural echoes, the ancient villain is returning to fulfill a prophecy that finds him with four followers -- a reference, perhaps, to the Bible’s Four Horseman.

"Or," says Sophie Turner as the telepathic Jean Gray, "the Bible got it from him."

In what’s becoming a trend, "X-Men: Apocalypse" appears to center on the kind of inter-hero conflict found in the recent "Avengers" film and soon to be seen in "Batman v Superman" and "Captain America: Civil War." Near the trailer’s end, James McAvoy’s Charles Xavier seems to be seduced by Apocalypse’s promise of power.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" is directed by franchise favorite Bryan Singer and stars Jennifer Lawrence as Raven, Olivia Munn as Psylocke and Michael Fassbender as Magneto. The film arrives in theaters May 27, 2016.
