WHAT A retrospective of works created between 1959 and the present, "Yonia Fain: Remembrance" pays tribute to lives lost during the Holocaust. Fain, 98, a retired <a href="/topics/Hofstra_University">Hofstra University</a> professor of art history and humanities, continues to paint and write poetry at his Brooklyn home. The Hofstra exhibition consists of 20 paintings and mixed-media art as well as a sampling of poems. "Yonia Fain's art, his often larger-than-life canvases convey the atrocities of war while simultaneously offering hope and the affirmation of life," says Beth Levinthal, <a href="http://www.newsday.com/topics/Hofstra_University">Hofstra University</a> Museum's executive director. Fain's life is a story of survival. A native of Russia, he escaped Soviet and Nazi pogroms in the 1930s and spent much of <a href="/topics/World_War_II">World War II</a> in a Jewish ghetto in <a href="/topics/Shanghai">Shanghai</a>. After the war, he worked with Diego <a href="http://www.newsday.com/topics/Diego_Rivera">Rivera</a> while teaching at the University of Mexico. (Works by&nbsp;Rivera are included in the exhibit.) In the '50s, he relocated to <a href="/topics/New_York_%28state%29">New York</a>, where he participated in three <a href="/topics/Whitney_Museum_of_American_Art">Whitney Museum of American Art</a> annual exhibits.
