Long Island, stand up!

For decades, area musicians wouldn’t claim Long Island as their home so that people would think they were cooler or more street-savvy. Well, no longer.

As we prepare for the upcoming Long Island Music Hall of Fame Induction Gala on Oct. 18 at the Paramount in Huntington, as well as for the future home of the Hall of Fame in Port Jefferson, we wanted to pull together a list of the songs that should be a source of civic pride. To help with that list, we consulted with a number of experts -- including local music historians, musicians and DJs.

These are the 100 songs every Long Islander should know — songs by people from here, about here, and written and recorded here, that also have changed the world of music. And by here, we go along with the LIHoF’s definition of Long Island: Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk

Each Monday, we will unveil a new batch of songs that every Long Islander should know. Let us know what you think of our list in the comment section below.
