Ryan Star has told poignant, detailed stories with his powerful voice for years. But "11:59" (Atlantic) is different. The high-profile help of producer Matt Serletic shows in the sharpness of these pop-rock visions, especially in the catchy "Right Now" and the gorgeous "Last Train Home." However, it's the Dix Hills native's upbeat, live-in-the-moment spirit and inspirational cheerleading that resound even longer than the memorable melodies. The single "Breathe" proves how potent a ballad can be, while the smash-in-the-making "Start a Fire" shows that dance-pop songs about sex can still be brainy. "11:59" shows Star's time has come.
