Billie Joe Armstrong brings in the green to 'Idiot'

For "American Idiot," the surprise addition of the Broadway musical's creator, Billie Joe Armstrong, to the cast last week certainly led to a string of "green" days.

According to Variety, "American Idiot" set a record for its box office take after the Green Day singer and musical's co-writer joined the cast as St. Jimmy to fill in for Tony Vincent, the actor who originated the role on Broadway. Vincent went on a leave of absence for family reasons. The Tony-winning musical took in $1.1 million for the week, more than doubling its earnings from the week before, and moved up to third place among Broadway shows.

Though producers probably would have liked that kind of box office infusion to continue, Armstrong's first Broadway run had to end Oct. 3 because he had to meet up with the rest of Green Day in Caracas, Venezuela, where the band was preparing to launch its South American tour.

To make Armstrong's run even more special, producers made each show's encore - his performance of "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" with the cast - available on its website to fans who attended the shows.

"Broadway was such a great experience," Armstrong said on his Twitter page. "Hopefully, I'll do [St. Jimmy] again."
