Billy Joel welcomes baby daughter Della Rose with wife Alexis Roderick
Billy Joel and wife Alexis Roderick, who were married in a surprise ceremony last month, have become parents.
The two "have welcomed their first child, a baby girl," the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and Gershwin Prize-winning singer-songwriter posted on his official website on Wednesday. "Della Rose Joel officially entered the world on Wednesday, August 12th at 2:40AM weighing in at 7 pounds, 6.5 ounces." Joel's representative said the baby was born in New York, without specifying whether the birth occurred in New York City or Long Island. Joel, 66, and Roderick, 33, had announced on April 14 that they were expecting.
"I'm gonna spend a lot of time with this kid," the hitmaker behind "Piano Man," "Just the Way You Are," "New York State of Mind" and countless other songs told Newsday's Glenn Gamboa in June. "I was thinking about that. I'm probably going to be able to spend more time with this kid than most people are able to spend with their children, because I don't have a regular job. I could be a stay-at-home dad for as long as I can stay alive."
This is Joel's second child and his fourth marriage. Born in the Bronx and raised in Hicksville, he was married to Elizabeth Weber Small from 1973 until their divorce in 1982, and went on to marry supermodel Christie Brinkley in March 1985; their daughter, singer Alexa Ray Joel, was born later that year. The couple divorced in 1994, and Joel married food critic and chef Katie Lee 10 years later.
In 2010, a year after he and Lee separated, Joel began dating Roderick, who was then a senior risk officer in the Garden City office of the financial institution Morgan Stanley. They were married by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on July 4 at Joel's Centre Island home.
Cuomo tweeted his congratulations Wednesday to the couple, writing: "I want to congratulate my good friends @BillyJoel and Alexis Roderick on the birth of their beautiful daughter, Della Rose."
