'Dark Night of the Soul' multimedia collaboration

'Dark Night of the Soul" (EMI) - the multimedia collaboration between Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse, director David Lynch and a cast of guest vocalists - was a bit gloomy from the beginning, especially in the electro-blues of the title track and the black twists of "Grim Augury" sung by the late Vic Chesnutt. The suicide of Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous in March makes the album - which was completed last year but held up due to legal wrangling - that much sadder. Luckily moments like the pretty "Man Who Played God" featuring Suzanne Vega help lighten the mood.

BOTTOM LINE Indie-pop that's pretty, haunting and, unfortunately, pretty haunting.
