The Grammy Award-winning rock band Foo Fighters will play Citi Field in Flushing this summer, Live Nation Entertainment announced Tuesday. The 20-year-old, Seattle-based group, consisting of frontman Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear, will headline the July 16 concert, with the British rock duo Royal Blood as the opening act.

Online pre-sales begin Dec. 1, Live Nation said, with general-public tickets for the performance going on sale Dec. 5 at 10 a.m. The tour, in support of the new album "Sonic Highways," begins with shows in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa, on Dec. 10 and 13 before beginning a South American leg on Jan. 15. It moves to New Zealand and Australia on Feb. 18, and to Europe on May 25. The band plays the tour's first U.S. date July 4 in Washington, D.C.

On Oct. 17, HBO premiered the series "Foo Fighters Sonic Highways," chronicling the album's eight-city recording odyssey.
