Grammy nominations 2016: Kendrick Lamar rules; Taylor Swift, The Weeknd each get 7

Kendrick Lamar’s ambitious hip-hop epic “To Pimp a Butterfly” landed him 11 Grammy nominations this year, while Taylor Swift and The Weeknd received seven nominations apiece.

Lamar’s timely, socially conscious album is up for album of the year against Swift’s pop juggernaut “1989” and The Weeknd’s breakthrough R&B album “Beauty Behind the Madness,” as well as Chris Stapleton’s country debut “Traveller” and Alabama Shakes’ rocking “Sound & Color.”

Lamar’s uplifting “Alright” is up for song of the year against Swift’s “Blank Space,” whose video was filmed at Oheka Castle in Huntington, Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush” and Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s “See You Again.”

“Blank Space” and “Thinking Out Loud” are also up for record of the year, against The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face,” Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” and D’Angelo and The Vanguard’s “Really Love.”

And if you’re wondering about Adele, hello, she’s not eligible for this year’s awards, which cover releases between Oct. 1, 2014, and Sept. 30, 2015.

Indie darling Courtney Barnett, British singer-songwriter James Bay, country newcomer Sam Hunt and pop stars Tori Kelly and Meghan Trainor will compete for best new artist.

Winners will be announced on Feb. 15 at a ceremony at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, which will air on CBS.
