Holmes Brothers, with 'Feed My Soul,' perform on LI
After more than 50 years in the music business and more than 30 years of performing as The Holmes Brothers, the trio of Sherman Holmes, Wendell Holmes and Popsy Dixon still has some surprises up their sleeves.
On the group's latest album, "Feed My Soul" (Alligator), the threesome has found a renewed fire to go with their well-known harmonies and bluesy soul, a combination they are eager to take on the road, including a stop at Landmark on Main Street in Port Washington on Saturday.
"We need to be working," Sherman Holmes says. "It's important to introduce people to our new CD."
There seems to be a different feel to "Feed My Soul." What was different this time?
A lot of the songs were written by my brother during his bout with cancer, and a lot of the songs reflect that. But we write about a lot of things, too. I write about the economy and things like that.
Do you feel like your albums just keep getting better?
Well, I would hope that - even though my favorite album was the first one, "In the Spirit." Each one is different, but they can be compared. I think our Alligator albums are different from our Rounder ones because of the production.
And you use Joan Osborne again as a producer.
It's so great to work with her. We've known her for so long.
What can we expect on the tour?
We will mainly be doing our new album. The songs usually change the more we sing them, but so far we haven't strayed too far from the originals. Now, the other songs we do by other known bands, like The Beatles, we have to do those differently. We have to do them our way.
