THE DETAILS '70s rock music will take over at Jones Beach, as the most recent incarnations of Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Doobie Brothers play their familiar hits. Skynyrd, one of the bands that epitomized Southern rock, will aim to thrill fans with hits such as "Free Bird" and "Sweet Home Alabama." The Doobie Brothers, meanwhile, are synonymous with California classic rock, with such hits as "China Grove" and "Listen to the Music" sure to please longtime fans.

WHO IS LYNYRD SKYNYRD? After cycling through several names, the band chose "Leonard Skinnerd" as a jab at one of their high school physical education teachers, Leonard Skinner, who was particularly strict about the school's policy against long hair. The band and Skinner eventually developed a friendlier relationship, as the teacher allowed a photo of his Leonard Skinner Realty sign to be used as the inside cover of 1975's "Nuthin' Fancy" album.

COVER PROBLEMS The original cover of 1977's "Street Survivors," Skynyrd's second album, featured the band surrounded by flames on a burning street. When frontman Ronnie Van Zant, singer Cassie Gaines and guitarist Steve Gaines, died in a plane crash three days after the record came out, though, the sleeve was changed to feature the band standing against a blank background out of sympathy for the victims' families.
