Justin Johnes’ first public performance was pretty memorable.
The 15-year-old from Massapequa sang a soulful version of Passenger’s “Let Her Go” on “The Voice” Monday night to land a slot on Blake Shelton’s team, while his mother, sister and grandmother rooted him on backstage.
“I feel like I’m living a dream right now,” Justin said after his selection. “I can’t even wrap my head around it.”
Until his “Voice” performance, Justin had only been seen on YouTube, recording covers and his own originals from his basement or his bedroom. He said on the show that he took inspiration from watching ‘NSync concert videos.
His appearance certainly struck a chord. The studio version of his “Let Her Go” performance hit the iTunes Top Singles chart and his “#teamjohnes” hashtag was trending on Twitter Monday night.
“We’ve definitely found a really good singer in you,” said Pharrell.
For being the final member added to Shelton’s team – and the final singer chosen overall – Justin received a “Blake’s Boo” t-shirt from his coach, as he moves into the show’s battle rounds.
Shelton and the other coaches were in disbelief after Justin told them that he had never performed in public before, saying that he only sang in videos.
“Isn’t this way more of a rush?” asked Shelton.
“Oh yeah!” replied Justin.
