The first battle round night of Season 7 offered a few surprises, as coaches Adam Levine, Pharrell, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani build their teams. However, maybe the biggest surprise is how at ease new coaches Pharrell and Stefani seem in their new roles.

Here’s how the night shook out:

TEAM PHARRELL: ELYJUH RENE vs. MAIYA SYKES, “If I Ain’t Got You”

A lovely, soulful battle over the Alicia Keys song between two excellent singers that Blake Shelton said was like “an awesome Grammy moment.” “You’re so different and yet you’re like a Lego and just connected,” Gwen Stefani told the pair. However, Elyjuh’s lovely voice was more distinctive, edging out Maiya.

PHARRELL PICK: Elyjuh

SHOULD’VE PICKED: Elyjuh

TEAM ADAM: Chris Jamison vs. Jonathan Wyndham, “Young Girls”

It was weird strategy on Adam Levine’s part to pit these two four-chair turns against each other on the Bruno Mars song, meaning one strong singer would be off his team. Adam chose Chris because there’s “a superstar locked in there.”

ADAM PICK: Chris

SHOULD’VE PICKED: Chris

TEAM GWEN: JEAN KELLEY VS. SUGAR JOANS, “Survivor”

This seemed like a struggle for them both, with the pacing and range of the Destiny’s Child original taking their toll. Sugar was behind the beat at times, but her voice was more distinctive. Jean’s voice was more mature and slightly stronger.

GWEN PICK: Sugar

SHOULD’VE PICKED: Jean (Stolen by Pharrell)

TEAM BLAKE: CRAIG WAYNE BOYD VS. JAMES DAVID CARTER, “Wave on Wave”

Two singers. Six names. One good song! James seemed to have the edge over Craig on the Pat Green song, his voice sounding more radio-friendly and likable, while Craig’s voice was tougher and stronger.

BLAKE PICK: James

SHOULD’VE PICKED: James (Gwen steals Craig)

TEAM GWEN: AMANDA LEE PEERS VS. TAYLOR JOHN WILLIAMS, “Jolene”

Their harmonies were both very strong, though Taylor seems like more of the entire package over the engaging Amanda. “Maybe I made a mistake to be on the show because this is just terrible,” Stefani said of having to pick one over the other.

GWEN PICK: Taylor

SHOULD’VE PICKED: Taylor

TEAM PHARRELL: GRIFFIN VS. LUKE WADE, “Maybe I’m Amazed”

The best battle of the night. Luke Wade’s unique, wild soulful voice was cool, but it was fun to hear Griffin let loose on the Paul McCartney classic. “I think Luke is the best singer in this competition right now,” Adam said. He may be right.

PHARRELL PICK: Luke

SHOULD’VE PICKED: Luke (Blake steals Griffin)
