Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Jay Z snag multiple Grammy nominations

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are going to need some new “Thrift Shop” outfits. The Seattle hip-hop duo is one of the top Grammy nominees this year with seven nominations, the only artists with nods in three of the top four categories.
The duo opened “The Grammy Nominations Concert Live” in Los Angeles last night with their ode to discount shopping and quickly netted a Song of The Year nomination for their hit “Same Love,” as well as nods for Album of The Year for “The Heist” and best new artist.
Jay Z led all artists with nine nominations for his “Magna Carta… Holy Grail” album, though none came in the top categories. Along with Macklemore & Lewis, Justin Timberlake, rapper Kendrick Lamar, and Pharrell Williams landed seven nominations.
Lamar will do battle with Macklemore & Lewis in the best new artist category, along with electronic artist James Blake, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran and country upstart Kacey Musgraves. They will also compete for Album of the Year honors, along with Taylor Swift for “Red,” Daft Punk for “Random Access Memories” and Sara Bareilles for “The Blessed Unrest,” who beat out favorites Timberlake, Jay Z and Bruno Mars in one of the nominations’ biggest surprises.
Other surprises included the snubbing of Kanye West, who landed only two nominations for his critically acclaimed “Yeezus” album, and Grammy favorite Timberlake getting shut out of the top categories.
Aside from Macklemore & Lewis, also up for Song of the Year are: Pink featuring Nate Ruess’ “Just Give Me a Reason,” Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven,” Lorde’s “Royals” and Katy Perry’s “Roar.”
Because eligibility year for this year’s Grammys runs between Oct. 1, 2012 and Sept. 30, 2013, Perry’s full album “Prism” isn’t eligible, though Macklemore & Lewis’ “The Heist” and Swift’s “Red,” which both arrived last year, are.
Pharrell Williams will battle himself in the Record of the Year category, where his collaboration with Daft Punk on “Get Lucky” and his work on Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” with T.I., will compete with Lorde’s “Royals,” Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive,” and Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven.”
"This year's nominations reflect the talented community of music makers who represent some of the highest levels of excellence and artistry of the year in their respective fields," said Neil Portnow, president/CEO of The Recording Academy.
The winners will be announced at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Jan. 26 – a few weeks earlier than usual so that the show doesn’t have to compete with the 2014 Winter Olympics.
