Pop star Mariah Carey and her boyfriend of seven months, casino and media mogul James Packer, became engaged Thursday night.
“Mariah did get engaged last night to her boyfriend, Australian billionaire James Packer, in New York,” her spokesman, Chris Chambers, told Newsday.
E! Online, which gave the first unconfirmed report late Thursday, said Packer, 48, proposed with a ring carrying a diamond estimated to be 35 carats. TMZ Thursday night said the proposal came at a dinner with several of the singer’s close friends at the Manhattan restaurant Eleven Madison Park.
This would be a third marriage for each. Carey, 46, born in Huntington and raised in Greenlawn, was married to music mogul Tommy Mottola from 1993 to 1997. The two had no children together. She wed singer-actor and “America’s Got Talent” host Nick Cannon on April 30, 2008, and their twins Moroccan and Monroe were born on the couple’s third anniversary. Cannon confirmed in August 2014 that he and Carey had been “living in separate houses for a few months,” and he filed for divorce that Dec. 12.
Packer, the son and grandson of Australian media barons, heads the gaming and resort conglomerate Crown Ltd. and owns the Hollywood production company RatPac Entertainment with filmmaker Brett Ratner. Forbes magazine estimates his wealth at $4.6 billion.
His 1999 to 2002 marriage to swimsuit model Jodhi Meares produced no children. In September 2013, Packer and his second wife, former model Erica Baxter, announced they were separating after six years of marriage. The couple has three children, daughters Indigo, 7, and Emmanuelle, 3, and son Jackson, 5.
Carey told daytime talk-show host Steve Harvey in November that she and Packer had met at a movie premiere in Aspen, Colorado, in 2014. “We were talking and laughing and people were getting mad at us and stuff like that. So, we hit it off,” the singer said. Harvey told her that Packer was a “lucky” man. Carey responded, “I’m lucky, too.”
