To indie-pop fans, the New Pornographers are neither novel nor into smut. It's just a name.

Apparently, that's not good enough for a college in Michigan. An upcoming New Pornographers show at Calvin College has been canceled by the school.

The reason? "After weeks of discussion and consideration, the irony of the band's name was impossible to explain to many," the college, located in Grand Rapids, said in a statement. It was just too much for Calvin, which is described on its website as "distinctly Christian, academically excellent, always reforming."

The band - led by Carl Newman and Neko Case - didn't make a big deal about it, simply posting a note on its website saying the Oct. 15 show was canceled and providing information on refunds.

And for the record, the group takes its name from a '60s Japanese film whose title was loosely translated to "The Pornographers."
