Seaford's Matthew Koma releases first EP

Matthew Koma remembers the first time he set foot inside Nassau Coliseum.

The Seaford native 24, says he was 3 years old when his parents took him to a Bruce Springsteen concert for the first of many nights watching stars onstage in Uniondale. On June 26, Koma will be onstage there himself, opening LMFAO's "Sorry for Party Rocking Tour" and playing songs from "Parachute," his first EP of danceable pop for Interscope Records, released May 29.

"I can't believe it's happening," Koma says, calling from the tour's opening night in Columbus, Ohio. "I remember how in one of my first bands we played the basement of Nassau Coliseum to like 40 kids getting yelled at by their moms and we said, 'Well, it still counts as playing Nassau Coliseum.' Now, we get to do it for real. . . . It will feel like a nice homecoming."

How do you feel about being part of this tour?

It's crazy to walk out into an arena and be like, 'Wow, this is where we're touring now." It's a real moment. Me and Kris were talking about how we've been through these parts from time to time. We played Columbus before -- at the High 5, to 12 people. It's cool to be able to come back to these places on different terms.

How did you pick "Parachute" to be your first single?

It was the first song we wrote for the record and it really became the fire-starter. It became the blueprint for the direction of the record. . . . It was the one that felt like the best introduction to this project and the best introduction to this world.

How would you describe the "Parachute" EP to people who haven't heard it?

It's songs that I hope people can relate to. . . . I feel like everything I've done up to this point is just part of the journey to get here -- trying on a bunch of different T-shirts to get to one that really fits. Anyone who's heard songs of mine from the last 10 years will hear that it's a natural progression and I think they will hear things in the writing and in the songs that they were attracted to in the first place. I hope they'll feel a connection to it.
